The Delhi High Court has issued a comprehensive injunction against using Gautam Gambhir’s image and has protected his personality and publicity rights against digital impersonation, AI-generated deepfakes and unauthorised commercial exploitation.In her order, Justice Jyoti Singh has granted a comprehensive ex parte ad interim injunction in favour of Gambhir and has restored full legal protection. The order further placed on formal judicial record the extraordinary achievements of Gambhir — international matches across Tests, ODIs and T20Is; his match-winning innings in the 2007 T20 World Cup final and the 2011 50-over World Cup final.Gambhir’s civil suit had cited instances where social media accounts had used fabricated videos across Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Facebook, using artificial intelligence, face-swapping, and voice-cloning technologies.The petition further cited instances including his resignation announcement that fetched over 29 lakh views and a fabricated clip showing him making remarks about senior cricketers’ World Cup participation that drew over 17 lakh views.As per the order, Amazon, Flipkart, Meta, Instagram, Google and You Tube have been asked to take down all infringing URLs, while others have been restrained from using his image including through artificial intelligence, deepfakes, face morphing and AI Chatbots without authorisation. Further, Amazon and Flipkart have been directed to disclose seller details and Meta and Google have to provide basic subscriber information and IP log data within two weeks.
