Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the BJP government would implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam “in the coming days”, reiterating the party’s commitment to ban polygamy.Addressing rallies in Sonitpur’s Dhekiajuli and Tihu in Nalbari district, Shah said the proposed UCC would prohibit multiple marriages, building on the state government’s earlier move to criminalise polygamy with provisions of up to 10 years imprisonment, with certain exceptions. “In the coming days, we will bring the UCC in Assam and ban four marriages,” he said at the rally.CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier pledged to bring in a UCC, if voted to power. Earlier, Uttarakhand became the first state in the country to have implemented the code, while Gujarat too has passed a Bill in this regard.Sharpening his attack on the Congress, Shah accused the party of encouraging illegal infiltration for vote-bank politics and said the BJP government would identify and deport every illegal immigrant.“Infiltration has been curbed, but this is not enough. Every illegal immigrant will be identified, removed from the voter list and deported,” he said, alleging that porous borders during the previous Congress regimes had altered Assam’s demography. He claimed that the Sarma government had freed around 1.25 lakh acres of land from encroachment and asserted that no such land would remain under illegal occupation in the next five years.Shah also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, saying Assam was no longer a “backward state” and highlighted investments, including a semiconductor unit and proposed industrial projects worth Rs 4.5 lakh crore. “The youth of Assam will get employment here itself,” he said.Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with counting of votes on May 4.
