Tension gripped the Nangal Kalan village in Mansa district after residents attempted to demolish a suspected drug peddler’s house following a youth’s suspected overdose death. The village panchayat had given police a two-day ultimatum to raze the house, warning they’d take matters into their own hands if no action was taken. The accused, Bawa alias Moongi, and three family members were arrested under the NDPS Act, with one member still absconding. Police had registered a case based on the deceased youth Amritpal’s mother’s complaint. Bawa was caught with 110 grams of heroin.A heavy police deployment stopped protesters, triggering a sit-in protest. Villagers accused the government and police of shielding peddlers. The standoff ended after officials assured action would be taken by Saturday.Sarpanch Resham Singh said the protest was called off but warned of action if the promise wasn’t fulfilled. “The panchayat had raided the house in November and recovered a digital weighing scale and habit-forming tablets,” he added.Mansa DSP Butta Singh Gill said the situation was under control, and action would follow legal procedure. “The Revenue Department has completed land demarcation. We’ll provide security for further action,” he said.Congress leader Bikram Singh Mofar had also joined the protesters.
