Senior advocate and former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Harvinder Singh Phoolka, known for his long legal battle seeking justice for victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday afternoon in Chandigarh.Phoolka, who served as Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly during his AAP tenure and resigned from the party in 2019 to focus on riot-related cases, would formally submit his membership at a ceremony in the city.Multiple sources in the BJP have confirmed the development. The development marks his return to active politics after several years.Earlier reports had indicated that Phoolka was inclined to join the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).In December 2024, he publicly announced his intention to enroll in the SAD during its membership drive, emphasising the need to strengthen a strong regional party for Punjab. However, that move did not materialize, leading to his current decision to align with the BJP. The joining event is expected to be presided over by senior BJP leaders Sunil Jakhar and Ashwani Sharma.Supporters and community representatives associated with Phoolka’s human rights work are likely to attend the function in significant numbers.Political circles view Phoolka’s switch as a notable shift ahead of the 2027 Punjab assembly elections. His experience as a Supreme Court lawyer and former MLA from Dakha is seen as a potential addition to the BJP’s efforts in the state.
