Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Wednesday extended financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh from his personal salary to the family of two farmer brothers who had allegedly died by suicide by jumping in front of a moving train last week. The Speaker visited Harineau village and participated in the final ‘ardas’ of the deceased brothers, identified as Jaskaran Singh and Jaswinder Singh. Paying tributes, he expressed deep grief over the tragic incident, stating that the untimely death had left the entire region in mourning.Describing the loss as irreparable, Sandhwan said such tragedies require collective support and resilience. Reaffirming the state government’s commitment, he assured that the Punjab Government stands firmly with the affected family and will provide all possible assistance. He announced that, apart from his personal contribution, the government would extend financial aid amounting to around Rs 10 lakh through various schemes. The Speaker further assured that cooperative loans taken by the family would be waived off. He also promised that the widows of the deceased would be provided suitable government jobs, while the education expenses of their children would be borne by the state.Meanwhile hundreds of farmers, protesting under the banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), continued their dharna for the third day in front of Land Mortgage Bank in Faridkot on Wednesday.Farmers alleged that banks routinely force them to submit blank signed cheques while sanctioning agricultural loans and later misuse them to exert pressure. “Even after loans are settled, these cheques become tools of harassment,” alleged Jagjjit Singh Dallewal, an SKM leader. The agitation followed the recent suicide of two debt-ridden brothers from Harinaeu village. On March 23, Jaskaran Singh (38) and Jaswinder Singh (34) allegedly died by suicide by jumping before a train near Bahmanwala. Burdened by mounting debt, the tragedy has triggered widespread outrage among farmers’ groups. The protesters have raised key demands, including return of all blank cheques, waiver of loans for the bereaved family, government jobs for the widows, and a halt to coercive recovery measures, including land auctions.
