The blue-coloured grenade lobbed at the Punjab BJP headquarters in Sector 37, Chandigarh, has sparked widespread curiosity on social media, though it is neither a new type of grenade nor an unfamiliar colour for Punjab Police and security agencies.Related news: Blast rocks Punjab BJP office in Chandigarh, Babbar Khalsa claims responsibilityWhat sets this incident apart is the viral video. It is probably the first time, footage of a grenade-lobbing attack surfaced almost immediately after the incident, fuelling speculation about the weapon across X and other platforms.Punjab Police officials said that nearly 80 grenades, including Chinese-made Type 86P and Austrian variants, have been recovered across the state since 2020–21. Both types have previously been used in attacks on police installations, they said.“Normally, such grenades are typically olive green, but we have recovered more than a dozen blue-coloured ones as well,” said a senior police official. “A blue body may indicate a variant, an export version, or even a repainted device. In several militaries, blue colour is often associated with training, practice, or marking grenades, not live combat versions.”Police said these grenades are smuggled from Pakistan to fuel violence in Punjab. “They come in all colours—blue, grey, black and olive green,” revealed another official. In the viral video, the perpetrators recorded themselves carrying out the attack while ensuring their faces remained out of frame. One man pulls the safety pin and lobs the grenade, while another films the act. Police said both appeared untrained, as they missed their target and fled in confusion. Investigators are now scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding to establish their identities. What is the Type 86P?The Type 86P is a high-explosive fragmentation hand grenade manufactured in China. Its plastic, oval-shaped body measures approximately 90 mm in length and 52 mm in diameter. Ii contains around 1,600 small steel balls, embedded in a plastic liner to enhance fragmentation. The grenade is filled with plasticised PETN, a powerful high explosive, and uses a striker-release fuze with a pyrotechnic delay of three to five seconds. The lever is held in place by hand, and removing the safety pin arms the device. Its lethal radius is about six metres, while the safety radius extends up to approximately 25 metres.
