Parliament was adjourned on Thursday with both Houses to reconvene on April 16 to discuss “a very important Bill”, said Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. He said the Budget session had been extended till April 16 for “important Bills.”Earlier in the Rajya Sabha, Rijiju said the same thing, provoking strong reactions from Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, who accused the government of acting like a bully. In the Lok Sabha too, Speaker Om Birla announced that the government had requested for the House to sit on April 16 for important legislative agenda. “Only the legislation will be taken up on April 16. There wil be no question hour, zero hour or any other business,” he said. The Centre is expected to bring Bills to amend the women’s reservation law and delink delimitation from the Census results thereby enforcing 33% women’s quotas in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies from 2029.Kharge questioned the government for “seeking political mileage” from the issue by bringing the agenda ahead of Assembly elections in West Bengal (polling on April 23, 29) and Tamil Nadu (April 23).Congress chief whip Jairam Ramesh earlier today demanded the government should clarify whether the House would be adjourned to a later date or sine die.Ramesh reiterated the Congress demand for an all party meeting on the women’s quota issue and said Kharge had written to Rijiju for convening such a meeting after the conclusion of Assembly elections on April 29.“The government has a single-minded objective of getting some political advantage of passing the Bill, violating the model code of conduct and have the Bill passed in the next two to three weeks,” Ramesh said.Rijiju, however, said the Centre had a commitment to the women of India.
