In a swift follow-up to Saturday’s breakthrough, the Counter Intelligence wing of the Punjab Police, in a joint operation with the Chandigarh Police and with the assistance of the Haryana Police’s STF, on Sunday arrested the two main perpetrators behind the April 1 grenade attack outside the BJP office in Sector 37, Chandigarh, from Rewari in Haryana, completing the unravelling of the entire Pakistan ISI-backed terror module within 48 hours of the first arrests. With this, all seven accused involved in the case are now behind bars, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav announced at a press conference here, where he was accompanied by ADGP, Counter Intelligence, Amit Prasad, ADGP, Internal Security, SK Verma, IGP, Intelligence, Sukhchain Singh Gill and AIG, SSOC, Mohali, Deepak Pareek. The two arrested have been identified as Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh, both residents of Rattangarh in Rupnagar. Amanpreet carries a prior criminal record, with FIRs of theft and snatching registered against him in Mohali and Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh, respectively.Investigations revealed that the two handlers directing the module — Baljot Singh, alias Jot, based in Portugal, and Harjeet Singh Laadi, based in Germany — had promised the accused a monetary reward of Rs 2 lakh for carrying out the attack, said DGP Yadav.During preliminary questioning, Gurtej disclosed that he had come in contact with a foreign-based handler approximately six months ago via social media. Acting on the handler’s instructions, Gurtej, along with co-accused Rubal Chauhan and Mandeep, alias Abhijot Sharma, collected a consignment of arms and grenades from Jasvir Singh, alias Jassi, at Bharapur village in SBS Nagar on March 28. Gurtej subsequently recruited Amanpreet to carry out the attack. On April 1, after conducting a recce of the target, Amanpreet hurled the grenade outside the BJP office, while Gurtej filmed the act on his mobile phone on the handler’s instructions. Both fled the scene immediately thereafter.DGP Yadav thanked the DGPs of Chandigarh and Haryana, and appreciated the significant role played by the Chandigarh Police and the STF of the Haryana Police in unravelling the conspiracy. The development comes a day after five accused — Balwinder Lal, alias Shami, of Majari village, Jasvir Singh, alias Jassi, of Bharapur village, Charanjit Singh, alias Channi, of Sujawalpur village (all from SBS Nagar), Rubal Chauhan of Thana village in Shimla district, and Mandeep, alias Abhijot Sharma, of Dhuri in Sangrur — were arrested and a live hand grenade, a .30 bore Zigana pistol and 10 live cartridges recovered from their possession by joint teams of the Chandigarh and Punjab Police.Chandigarh DGP Sagar Preet Hooda and DGP Yadav had on Saturday jointly disclosed that the module was ISI-backed and operated through foreign-based handlers in Portugal and Germany. The complete busting of the module within four days of the attack carries significant implications. With Punjab heading towards the Assembly elections, Pakistan’s ISI has been making repeated attempts to destabilise the state by activating sleeper cells and terror modules. The Chandigarh BJP office blast was widely seen as a targeted strike designed to create communal tension, generate fear and embarrass the AAP government ahead of the electoral cycle. The attack had triggered a fierce political firestorm, with the BJP, AAP, Congress and the SAD trading barbs and attempting to score political points.
