Aam Aadmi Party MLA Harmeet Pathanmajra was shifted from Central Jail, Patiala, to Central Jail, Bathinda, on Wednesday night. Pathanmajra, who had recently been sent to Patiala jail after completing a 12-day police remand with the Patiala police, had spent only two nights in the Patiala jail before being transferred to the Bathinda jail on the orders of jail authorities.The MLA had been arrested by Patiala police from Gwalior in connection with a case registered under Sections 376(2)(N), 420 and 506 on a complaint by a woman. Following his arrest, he was remanded to police custody for questioning and was later sent to judicial custody in Patiala jail, where he was lodged in a separate cell for security reasons.On Wednesday night, he was shifted to the Bathinda jail under tight security. A police team led by a local DSP, along with five other police personnel, escorted him to the Bathinda jail.A senior official of the jail department said the transfer was carried out for security reasons.However, members of the MLA’s family and his supporters termed the move discriminatory and vindictive. They alleged that the transfer to the Bathinda jail was intended to make it difficult for his family and supporters to meet him.Pathanmajra had made headlines during the floods last year when he publicly criticised his own government and allegedly used harsh words against leaders of the party’s Delhi leadership.After the case was registered against him, he had initially gone absconding and reportedly went to Australia despite lookout circulars being issued at airports across the country. After remaining abroad for several months, he was later arrested by the Patiala police from Gwalior, last month, after he returned to India.
