The Indian Athletics Series-3 held at the newly laid Mondo track at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium had the perfect conditions for some of the known names of Indian track & field, including young javelin thrower Sachin Yadav, to shine. But it was Rohit Yadav who pipped Sachin to finish first and earn bragging rights in the most anticipated competition of the evening.Sachin, who has been training in Delhi with coach Sergey Makarov, was looking good in training to go past the 90m mark, but could only reach a best of 81.95m to finish second. In fact, he was placed fourth behind Yashvir Singh (80.38), Rohit (79.02m) and Kishore Jena (77.79m) after starting with a below average attempt of 76.84m.Rohit went into a straight lead with his next attempt of 81.90m. Sachin then took the lead in his fifth attempt that was registered at 81.95m. Representing Railways, Rohit hit back immediately with a better throw of 82.17 to win the top position. Yashvir finished third with a best attempt of 81.61m. Army’s Shivam Lohakare and Jena both failed to breach the 80m mark.Animesh Kujur, the reigning national record holder in 100m, held off Railway’s Tamil Arasu S in a tight finish to win the marquee competition of the day. Even though both were timed 10.28 seconds at the finish line, it was Odisha’s sprinter who was declared the winner. Reliance’s Gurindervir Singh finished third after clocking 10.40. Speaking after the race, Kujur said he was satisfied with the result.“I am happy and satisfied with the timing. The season is long and my aim is to get to 10s and 20s in 100m and 200m. Today’s race was the right kind of build-up for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, which are very important competitions for us,” he said.Double Asian Games gold medallist Tajinderpal Singh Toor showed form as he crossed 21.03m to win the shot put competition. Karnaveer Singh (19.30m) and Railways Anurag Singh Kaler (18.03m) finished second and third, respectively.“What can I say, I had been troubled for the last two years because of my ankle injury. I have still not reached my form of 2021-23. If I get anywhere close then we can do wonders. My aim is to win a shot put medal at the Commonwealth Games as I believe it has never been done,” Toor said.
