This is a story that a few people know—and it involves the formidable singing diva Asha Bhosle. A synonym for talent and perfection, Ashaji’s songs have long been considered benchmarks of musical excellence.Yet, in her illustrious career, there was a rare moment when her voice was replaced. And it was none other than the perfectionist filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali who made that bold decision.The film in question was the epic blockbuster ‘Devdas’. The song was the iconic mujra, “Maar Daala”.It was originally recorded in Asha Bhosle’s voice. However, something didn’t quite align with Bhansali’s vision—or so he felt. Known for his uncompromising standards, Bhansali wanted the song re-recorded.Composer Ismail Darbar was stunned.“How can you ask THE Asha Bhosle to redo a song? No one tells her something like that,” he reportedly said, unable to believe Bhansali’s intent.But Bhansali had a different plan. Instead of requesting Ashaji to re-record the track, he chose to scrap the version altogether and start afresh. The song was eventually recorded in Kavita Krishnamurthy’s voice. That is the version audiences heard—and loved.Within the Devdas team, there was an expectation that the decision might lead to serious repercussions. However, to her immense credit, Ashaji handled the situation with grace.She raised no objections, despite what must have been a surprising and possibly hurtful decision. In fact, for a long time afterward, she would teasingly remind Bhansali that her voice apparently hadn’t been “good enough” for him.A somewhat similar situation occurred earlier with composers Jatin-Lalit. They landed the prestigious project Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge thanks to Asha Bhosle herself. She had personally called Yash Chopra and recommended the duo, asking him to meet them.However, when the film’s soundtrack was finalized, almost all the songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Asha Bhosle was left with just one track—“Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main”. When she arrived to record it, Jatin and Lalit were understandably uncomfortable.Sensing their unease, Ashaji diffused the tension with characteristic warmth and wit. “I’ve heard Lata didi has sung the other songs beautifully,” she said—gracious as ever.
