A Ludhiana youth has been booked for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 24-year-old woman from Gahaur village by emotionally harassing her after physically exploiting her on the pretext of marriage.The body of the victim was recovered from the Abohar branch of the Sirhind canal near Ghawaddi village on Tuesday, two days after she left home, allegedly stating she was going to pay obeisance at a religious place in Ludhiana.The accused, Manjit Singh, alias Jit, has been booked under Sections 64 and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Dehlon police station.According to the FIR registered on the statement of Avtar Singh of Gahaur village, the complainant’s 24-year-old daughter left home on Sunday on the pretext of visiting a gurdwara, but her body was later recovered from the Sirhind canal branch.The complainant alleged that, based on information received from his wife, the accused had been physically exploiting and emotionally harassing the victim, which led her to take the extreme step of jumping into the canal.Police, led by SHO Avneet Kaur, have initiated an investigation into the matter.
