Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke in the Lok Sabha on the amendment to the women’s reservation law, urging members to rise above politics and support greater participation of women in decision-making.“In India’s development journey, MPs have got an opportunity to make women part of decision-making,” he said.Stating that India is marching ahead with confidence in the 21st century, the Prime Minister said a developed nation is not defined only by infrastructure but also by the participation of women in policymaking.“There is no need to give political colour to the issue of women’s reservation in legislatures,” he said, urging MPs not to miss the opportunity to ensure reservation for women. He also cautioned that those opposing the women’s quota would “pay a price for a long time” and said that those who had opposed such measures in the past were never forgiven by women.“I come from the most backward community, but it is my responsibility to take everyone along,” he said, adding that if all members move forward together, the decision will not benefit any one party but will strengthen the country’s democracy. The Prime Minister said the women’s reservation Bill should not be viewed in political terms and noted that while it could not be implemented in 2024, there is now an opportunity to bring it into effect for the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. — with PTI
