Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Thursday asked the Aam Aadmi Party government whether farmers in the state would be able to sell their wheat this year, alleging that procurement agencies were reluctant to purchase it for reasons best known to them.Warring said he had received reports from across the state that procurement agencies were avoiding the purchase of wheat on various pretexts. As a result, a majority of farmers were stuck in mandis as they were unable to find buyers for their produce. The PCC president noted that there were some issues with the wheat crop due to unseasonal rains. He said this was normal and that previous state governments had resolved such issues with the Centre, ensuring that procurement agencies did not raise unnecessary objections. He pointed out that neighbouring states like Haryana and Rajasthan had already secured relaxations in procurement norms. He alleged that since no one in Punjab had taken up the matter with the Centre, no such directions had been issued here, leaving farmers struggling to sell their produce and forced to wait in mandis for days.Warring further said that while central agencies were delaying procurement over specification norms, state agencies were also reluctant to purchase wheat due to inadequate storage space. He termed this a failure of the AAP government in making timely and adequate preparations for procurement. He added that such preparations were a standard practice, and failure to do so reflected “gross and criminal negligence” on the part of those responsible.Recalling the Congress regime, Warring said farmers never had to wait more than 24 hours to sell their wheat and paddy and receive payment. He claimed this was possible due to proper planning and advance preparation, which, he alleged, the present government had failed to ensure.
