Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said all five southern states will gain Lok Sabha seats after the proposed delimitation exercise to be conducted for implementing 33 % women’s reservation by 2029.Intervening in the debate on the Bills that were introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Shah said five southern states have 129 MPs and 23.7 % representation in the current Lok Sabha of 543 members.”After proposed delimitation, these states will have 195 MPs and 24 % representation. So they will not lose any seats. They will gain. A false narrative is being spun that southern states will lose their strength in the Lok Sabha and will suffer heavy losses. That is not true,” Shah said.He interpreted the Bills and said Karnataka has 28 seats in a 543 MP house, which is 5.15 % of the House strength.”After the Bills were piloted today, Karnataka will have 42 seats and 5.14 % in a 815 MP house. So there is no loss to Karnataka. Andhra Pradesh has 25 seats and 4.60 % representation. This will rise 50 % to 38 seats and 4.65 % share in the Lok Sabha. Telangana has 17 seats and 3.13 % share in the House. After a 50 % raise on the current seats, Telangana will have 26 MPs and 3.18 % representation,” said Shah.He said Tamil Nadu’s strength will also rise from 49 MPs and 7.18 % share in the House to 59 MPs and 7.23 % representation after a 50 % rise in LS seats.”Kerala has 20 MPs and 3.68 % strength in the current Lok Sabha. It will have 30 MPs and 3.67 % strength after the delimitation,” the Home Minister said, junking the narrative that southern India will suffer.”After 50 % seats are raised for every state in the Lok Sabha, their strength will not reduce. It will rise,” he said, taking a jibe at Congress and saying,” said Shah, adding, “I will explain in detail tomorrow the nuances of the Bills, even a KG student will understand.”Shah also dismissed opposition charges that the Government does not want to conduct a caste census.”The Cabinet has decided to conduct a caste census. That will happen. A myth is being spread that there is no column on caste in the census form. Right now, buildings are being counted and buildings do not have castes. When individuals are counted, their caste will be asked,” said the Home Minister. He said the 850 MP number was reached because once 33 % of this is reserved for women — 543 seats — the current LS strength stays in the general category, from where also women are free to contest.
