A day after Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal visited the Malout grain market and alleged that a farmer’s wheat crop—used by Cabinet Minister and Malout MLA Baljit Kaur to mark the start of procurement—remained unsold, the minister on Saturday issued a clarification through a video message on social media. In the video, Baljit Kaur stated that the farmer’s crop had been procured on the same day and suggested that he might have brought additional produce later.Notably, the grain market has almost reached its full capacity, and Sukhbir had claimed that despite the procurement season officially starting on April 1, farmers were facing problems and their produce had been lying unsold for the past 10 days.Referring to Sukhbir as her “elder brother”, the minister also questioned the role of the SAD and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, asking what steps she had taken in raising the state’s demand for relaxation in procurement norms following recent rain and hailstorm damage.“We were consistently urging the Centre government for relief. A letter granting relaxation in procurement was issued on April 17,” she said.Baljit Kaur further clarified that she was not present in Malout on Friday as she had travelled to Chandigarh to attend a Cabinet meeting. “Had I been there, I would have welcomed him and personally shown him the situation at the grain market,” she added. The minister asserted that she had directed officials to ensure wheat procurement is carried out in a phased manner, without giving undue priority to anyone. She also took a swipe at opposition parties, saying, “I am thankful that Congress and SAD leaders are now stepping out of their homes. Farmers should remember who is standing with them, and who supported the three controversial farm laws.”Highlighting damage caused by recent weather, she claimed that rain and hailstorm at Gandhar village here had destroyed even dry fodder for livestock. “I arranged fodder for the affected villagers two days ago,” she said.
