Hours after a resident of Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh flagged the town being wrongly shown as China’s ‘Medog’ on the official portal of the Registrar General of India (RGI), the authorities today rushed to rectify the error.User Mohonto Panging Pao (@MontyPanging) stated on X that when he attempted self-enumeration on the official portal (se.census.gov.in), the map interface showed Pasighat as a Chinese town. The user tagged several officials and called for urgent attention.Responding to the post, the RGI through its X handle @CensusIndia2027 said that the issue had been resolved. “An issue was mentioned during self-enumeration regarding map location in Pasighat, East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, today. The issue was raised with map services provider and it has been resolved,” the post said.In the post, the Pasighat resident had said: “#Census2027 During self-enumeration attempt on se.census.gov.in maps showing Pasighat, East Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, as ‘Medog’! Medog is a town in China! CEO of Google @sundarpichai is Indian! Even official govt portals are virtually ceding our territory! Needs urgent intervention! @CensusIndia2027 @PMOIndia @ArunachalCMO.”Census 2027 is expected to be a largely digital exercise, with self-enumeration allowing citizens to submit their details online. As part of this system, users are required to confirm their address using an integrated map interface. In the first phase of the census, houselisting is being done, while in the second phase, individuals and families will be counted, while caste census will also be conducted. The map layer in the website plays a key role in identifying and validating locations during the data collection process, making the accuracy of displayed place names important for official records.
