The Vigilance Bureau range, Ludhiana, caught the station house officer (SHO) of Police Division-4 red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000.Accused Inspector Gurjit Singh had taken money from the mother of one of the accused nabbed by police for betting on IPL matches on the pretext of returning the gold ring and silver bracelet of the betting accused to his mother.Complainant Vinu, wife of Sham Lal, appeared at the office of the Vigilance Bureau range, Ludhiana, and recorded her statement with Inspector Kulwant Singh.She said a FIR was registered on April 17 at Police Division-4 under Sections 318(4), 336(2), 338, 336(3) and 340(2) of BNS 2023 against her son, Shubham.She said SHO Gurjit Singh was demanding a bribe of Rs 35,000 for returning the silver bracelet and gold ring.The complainant stated that she met the SHO on April 20 at around 7 pm, accompanied by her husband, Sham Lal. When she inquired about her silver bracelet and gold ring, the SHO allegedly asked whether she had brought money, saying the valuables would only be returned upon payment.She said she had only Rs 10,000, but despite accepting that amount, the SHO insisted that the items would be returned only after receiving a total bribe of Rs 35,000.Vigilance Bureau (VB) officials said the complainant had recorded the conversation with the SHO on her mobile phone. On April 21, she approached the VB and gave her statement to Inspector Kulwant Singh.Acting on this, the VB team laid a trap and arrested Inspector Gurjit Singh while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000.A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the SHO posted in the Police Commissionerate, Ludhiana.
