Independent MP Pappu Yadav on Tuesday triggered a sharp political backlash with a controversial remark on women in politics, shifting focus away from the already heated debate on the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill.Addressing a press conference in Purnia, Bihar, Yadav made a sweeping and objectionable claim, suggesting that a vast majority of women cannot survive in politics without access to private spaces controlled by male politicians. The remark, seen as deeply problematic, drew immediate criticism for its tone and implications.He went on to argue that while Indian society symbolically places women on a pedestal, calling them goddesses, it fails to ensure them dignity or equal footing in public life. In his view, both the political system and society are responsible for creating conditions that restrict women’s independent rise.The statement has since sparked outrage, with political voices cutting across lines questioning both the language and the mindset behind it. Even as some pointed to structural barriers faced by women, Yadav’s phrasing has been widely seen as undermining the very cause he sought to highlight.The controversy comes days after the Lok Sabha rejected the Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at implementing women’s reservation from the 2029 general elections. The proposal was tied to the delimitation exercise, a move strongly opposed by several opposition parties.During voting after a joint debate on three Bills, 298 MPs supported the amendment while 230 voted against it, leading to its defeat. Opposition leaders argued that linking reservation to delimitation based on the 2011 Census effectively delays its rollout.Yadav had participated in the debate and also raised concerns about the lack of representation of weaker sections. However, his remarks on women have now overtaken the larger legislative discussion, placing him at the centre of a controversy that continues to escalate.
