8 Indians dead, one missing in West Asia conflict so far, says government

As many as eight Indian nationals have died and one remains missing since the West Asia conflict began, the government said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, 12 Indian seafarers who had been stranded in Iraq arrived in Mumbai yesterday after Iraqi airspace reopened.Addressing the inter-ministerial briefing here, officials said: “14 Indian vessels —13 India-flagged and one India-owned — remain in the Strait of Hormuz. The India-flagged crude oil tanker, Desh Garima, carrying 97,422 metric tonnes of crude oil and 31 seafarers on board, crossed the Strait of Hormuz on April 18 and is expected to arrive in Mumbai on April 22.The Shipping Ministry through the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), has facilitated the safe repatriation of more than 2,590 Indian seafarers so far, including 27 in the last 24 hours from various locations across the Gulf region.Giving details about the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), officials said it had been closely monitoring the situation and had taken a series of proactive measures in coordination with Petroleum Ministry and other ministries concerned to ensure smooth operations of dairy value chain. Milk procurement, processing and supply across the country have remained uninterrupted. The price of milk and milk products are stable, no supply disruption has occurred in the market, and payments to dairy farmers have continued throughout the crisis period.On fuel supply and availability, officials said despite the ongoing geopolitical situation, the government had ensured uninterrupted, 100 per cent supply of domestic LPG, PNG and CNG (transport). Enforcement actions to curb hoarding and black marketing of LPG are continuing nationwide. On Monday, more than 2,200 raids were conducted across the country. Public sector oil marketing companies have also intensified surprise inspections. Penalties have been imposed on 274 LPG distributorships, while 67 distributorships have been suspended as of yesterday.During April 2026 (till April 20), a total of 1,23,680 metric tonnes of commercial LPG was sold, equivalent to more than 65 lakh 19-kg LPG cylinders, according to official data. On April 20 alone, 8,822 metric tonnes of commercial LPG were sold, equivalent to over 4.64 lakh 19-kg cylinders, indicating steady demand for commercial fuel consumption during the month. The Coal Ministry has also directed the Coal India and Singareni Collieries to supply additional coal to states for distribution to small and medium consumers.
