The Amritsar rural police on Thursday formally arrested Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh from Dibrugarh jail in connection with the Ajnala violence case following the expiry of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA).He was produced before the Ajnala sub-divisional court through video conferencing from Dibrugarh after the arrest. The police sought a 15-day remand for further investigation into the case. However, after hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted only two days of police custody. During this period, he will remain lodged at Dibrugarh.Defence counsels Harpal Singh Khara and Rituraj Singh submitted that the police sought remand for interrogation regarding the alleged recovery of weapons and vehicles, including the van said to have carried the palki of Guru Granth Sahib, apart from probing the conspiracy angle and the alleged formation of the ‘Anandpur Khalsa Force’ during his tenure as the chief of the Waris Punjab De organisation. The defence argued that the case was already under trial before the Ajnala court and currently at the stage of evidence. The defence further contended that the police had not referred to the alleged vehicle during the past three years of investigation or trial, and that it was not involved in the offence.“After considering the submissions, the court granted only a two-day police remand. The matter will now be heard on Saturday,” they said.Amritpal Singh has been lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail since April 23, 2023, after being detained under the NSA, nearly two months after the Ajnala police station clash. Around 41 persons have been named in the FIR in the case.Several of his associates, including Papalpreet Singh, Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Kulwant Singh, Varinder Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bhukhanwala, his uncle Harjit Singh, Basant Singh, Gurinder Singh Aujla and Bhagwant Singh, were also detained under the NSA earlier. They were shifted to Punjab last year and are currently facing trial in the Ajnala court. The state government had approached the High Court seeking permission to arrest him in the case while allowing him to remain lodged in the Assam jail, citing security and law and order concerns in case of his physical production in Amritsar. It also requested that the proceedings be conducted through video conferencing. In an order issued recently, the High Court permitted the state to keep him lodged in Dibrugarh jail even after the expiry of his NSA detention and following his arrest in the Ajnala case. It also allowed all proceedings, including police and judicial remand, to be conducted virtually from Dibrugarh.
