Arshdeep Kaur of Gurdaspur recently delivered a knockout punch to the “glass ceiling”. Defying conventional notions of softness associated with femininity, Kaur has established herself in the male-dominated domain of boxing.Kaur, a student of the local Pt Mohan Lal SD College for Women, became the toast of the town by bagging a gold medal at the prestigious Sagi Ramakrishnam Raju Trophy-2026, which concluded recently in Andhra Pradesh. According to coaches, the standard of the sport and competition in the national-level boxing meet is much tougher, harder and harsher than what one endures in other national championships.Kaur dedicated her victory to Principal Neeru Sharma and Gagandeep Kaur, head of the physical education department at her college. For her, boxing is a transformative sport that offers empowerment, physical strength and intense discipline and serves as a therapeutic outlet for aggression, while being a vehicle to challenge traditional gender norms.A large part of the credit for Arshdeep’s success goes to her psyche, which is every bit as important in the sport as its physical aspect. Nimble-footed Kaur managed to hoodwink even seasoned opponents with consummate ease before delivering her final blow. When she could not overpower her rivals, she outmatched them with her stamina, endurance and patience.Principal Neeru Sharma said, “The strength of a man is external and is determined by what he can exert, whereas the strength of a woman like Arshdeep is internal. It is determined by what she could endure. This was proven by her by keeping her patience during times that were frustrating or painful. It is indeed a matter of immense pride for us that she is a student of our institution. She will inspire other girls to do better, be it the field of sports or academics.”Commenting on her experience, Arshdeep said, “Every bout was a challenge for me. It remained a challenge till I reached the finals. After all, if a bout does not challenge you, it will not change you. I kept changing my tactics and technique keeping my opponents in mind. The process was repeated round after round till I won the crown. For me, good was not good enough because my coaches always expected something better.”wuw
