ANDRE ONANA has been both a cup hero and villain this season.

The goalkeeper had a total disaster when playing for Manchester United against Grimsby in the League Cup second round this season.

But he was the penalty hero for Trabzonspor in the Turkish Cup

After letting in two goals during the game, the Red Devils fought back to take the game into a shootout.

Onana saved the third penalty in the shootout, but it was not enough to see United win before hitting sudden death.

And he went on to concede 12 kicks before Bryan Mbeumo lost his nerve from 12 yards at the second time of asking as Ruben Amorim‘s side crashed out of the cup to League Two opposition for the first time.

Onana, 30, went on loan to Trabzonspor in Turkey shortly after, while United recruited Senne Lammens to play between the sticks.

But the Cameroon goalkeeper looks to have finally made himself a cup hero in Turkey after saving three penalties in a row.

Trabzonspor were in action in the Turkish Cup quarter-final against Samsunspor.

After a goalless 120 minutes of football, the winner had to be decided via a penalty shootout.

And Onana, the villain of his parent club’s exit from a cup, became the hero for his loan club.

The former Inter Milan and Ajax shot-stopper showed some of the class that made him one of the best goalies in the world at one stage as he saved three penalties in a row.

He firstly denied Ľubomír Šatka by diving to his left.

Marius Mouandilmadji was next to be thwarted down at the same side but more centrally.

Yunus Emre Çift was the big save that handed visitors Trabzonspor an insurmountable advantage as Onana dived down to his left.

Onana did concede the final penalty he faced against Logi Tómasson, the Icelander sending the goalkeeper the wrong way, but the damage had already been done.

The on-loan United keeper was swarmed by jubilant team-mates as they booked their place in the last four.

But United fans on social media had still not forgiven him for his past sins at Grimsby.

One fan said: “Shame he couldn’t save any on a cold, rainy night in Grimsby.”

A second said: “Andre Onana is just an all-or-nothing goalie. He’s either unbeatable or dreadful depending on a pretty nebulous set of circumstances.”

A third added: “Needed this against Grimsby.”

Another said: “Oh so now he saving penalties?”

It is understood that after his loan spell finishes, Onana wants to fight for his future at Old Trafford.

However, the club have no plans to reintegrate him into the squad and are reportedly willing to take a hit to offload him this summer.
