A massive fire broke out in the forest area near the local Jahaj Ground on Saturday at around 4 pm, causing widespread damage to the environment and local wildlife. It took several hours of intense effort by fire departments from four different districts to bring the blaze under control.The fire started in the reed beds (sarkanda) in the afternoon. Due to the dense forest spread across approximately 250 acres and strong winds, the flames spread rapidly, taking a severe form. The situation was particularly sensitive as the forest area is located adjacent to Army Headquarters.Upon receiving information, the local administration and the Army immediately swung into action. Given the scale of the fire, firefighting units were called in from three neighbouring districts — Ferozepur, Moga and Muktsar.Fire Department personnel said that although they reached the spot promptly, high wind speeds made it extremely difficult to contain the blaze. After hours of continuous effort, the teams managed to douse the flames.While the fire was eventually brought under control, the ecological damage has been severe. A large number of animals, peacocks and various bird species perished in the blaze. The dense smoke and heat trapped wildlife within the 250-acre area.MLA Gurdit Singh Sekhon visited the site to oversee the operations. He said that the district and police administration immediately deployed teams after the fire was reported and coordinated with nearby districts for additional fire tenders.“While we have successfully controlled the fire, the loss of trees and the death of so many animals and birds is deeply saddening,” Sekhon said.Authorities are currently monitoring the area to ensure that no hidden embers reignite the dry vegetation.
