Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Jattvibeday condemned the killing of party worker Debdeep Chatterjee in West Bengal’s Asansol, alleging the involvement of workers linked to the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and calling for immediate arrests and strict action.Chatterjee, who was associated with Asansol North Congress candidate Prasenjit Puitandi, was allegedly attacked during post-poll violence and later succumbed to his injuries, the party said. The state Congress unit alleged that the assault was carried out by individuals connected to the ruling party.Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi described the killing as unacceptable and expressed condolences to the victim’s family. He alleged that political violence had become entrenched in West Bengal after elections, with Opposition workers being targeted. He added that the Congress would continue to follow a non-violent political path rooted in constitutional values despite such incidents.Calling for accountability, Gandhi demanded the immediate arrest of those involved, strict punishment under the law and adequate security and compensation for Chatterjee’s family. He said the party would not yield to what he described as a pattern of intimidation. The West Bengal Congress also raised concerns over law and order, saying the incident reflected a broader climate of fear for Opposition workers in the state. It pointed to the timing of the violence soon after polling as indicative of political vendetta. The party further claimed that, at the time of reporting, no FIR had been registered, questioning the response of the local administration. It sought a fair, impartial and time-bound investigation into the incident, along with protection measures for the victim’s family.Describing the killing as an attack on democratic functioning, the Congress said it would continue to press for justice and accountability while reiterating its demand for prompt action against those responsible.
