Emergency crews were scrambled to the westbound carriageway between Junction 14, for Hungerford, and Junction 15, for Swindon.

A man in his 20s – the driver of the BMW – is fighting for life in hospital.

The collision sparked a major oil spillage across the busy route.

National Highways said: “”Due to the severity and seriousness of the collision, a complex and protracted collision investigation by Wiltshire Police was required followed by vehicle recovery. This work was completed by 5.30pm.

“The collision resulted in a substantial spillage of oil and diesel.

“Following assessment of the road surface it has been determined that the road is not in a safe state to be re-opened to traffic and a full resurfacing is required.”

There are also delays of an hour and a half on the M4 between Junction 16 (Swindon) and 17 (Chipphenham), where a vehicle left the carriageway.

Disruption is expected until 9am, with two lanes closed.

The stretch between Junction 13 and 14 also has delays until 11.15, where three lanes are closed after a crash between two lorries.

National Highways said: “The M4 in Berkshire westbound is closed between J13 Newbury and J14 Hungerford due to a traffic collision between two lorries.

“Our Traffic Officers and emergency services are on scene.

“Delays currently are 10 minutes and 1 mile of congestion against normal travel times.”

Junction 12 westbound also has delays of 15 minutes, according to National Highways.
