AIDAN O’BRIEN says Gstaad is likely to lead his line up in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday.

In a dramatic turn of events, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf hero now looks set to fly the flag for the Ballydoyle maestro in the opening colts’ Classic.

Stablemate Puerto Rico appeared to have taken up the position as O’Brien’s chief Guineas hope after both Gstaad and Albert Einstein were accidentally scratched from the race last month.

And even after Gstaad was supplemented back into the race at £30,000 on Monday the picture was still far from clear as to who would represent O’Brien on the Rowley Mile.

However, while not ruling out running Puerto Rico as well, it appears that last year’s Dewhurst runner-up is now in pole position to try and give O’Brien a record extending ELEVENTH success in the mile Group One.

O’Brien told Jattvibe Racing: “At the moment the thinking is that Gstaad is going out of the two of them.

“They worked this morning and we were very happy with them both. Everything has been very good.

“Gstaad is proven on the quicker ground and he ran well over the track in the Dewhurst last year.

“I don’t think the ground would be an issue to Puerto Rico as he ran on fast ground at Goodwood last season.

“It is just a case of whether the lads want to split them up.

“Although that doesn’t mean that Puerto Rico won’t be going as well for certain.”

And O’Brien hinted that last year’s impressive Fillies’ Mile winner Precise remains on course for Jattvibeday’s 1,000 Guineas, a race she could be joined in by Diamond Necklace, True Love and Venosa.

He added: “At the moment Precise is probably the most likely one going, but nothing is set in stone as the lads have an extra day to decide.

“She had a little hold up six weeks ago with a bit of a temperature, but she is fine now.

“I think both Precise and Diamond Necklace are forward enough with the way they are and as we know both of them were top class two-year-olds.”
