To what does the Undekhi franchise owe its uninterrupted success? The series is in its fourth season now.Undekhi is a mirror of our times. It sometimes reaches dead ends in its plot construction, but the writers expertly steer the plot out of sticky situations. They know better than the characters that, much as we’d like, good guys don’t always win.In Season 4, there is plenty of ‘feud’ for thought. There are the old characters played with reined-in verve by all, especially Surya Sharma, Aanchal Singh and Dibyendu Bhattacharya. The best part of watching Undekhi is that it doesn’t glorify the life of affluent crime, although the main antagonist Rinku is every bit the cinematic hero gone the wrong way.The scripting is rigorously non-judgemental. There are no attempts to rationalise the criminal arrogance of the Atwal family as the members confidently stride from one level of reprehensible criminalised behaviour to another. In other words, irresistible.Produced by Applause Entertainment in association with Banijay Asia, and directed by Ashish R Shukla, the series continues to evolve into a gripping saga of power, ego and identity. Backed by an ensemble cast, including Harsh Chhaya, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Surya Sharma, Varun Badola, Ankur Rathee, Shivjyoti Rajput and Gautam Rode, the new season is a darker, more intense and layered narrative. This excruciatingly exhilarating journey into the rot at the heartland of privileged feudality is like one straggly but stubborn beam of light in a dark tunnel. The arrogance of unlimited wealth is on full display as the Atwal family.Hopefully, the super-rich in our country would someday understand that wealth and the accompanying power comes with a responsibility towards the weaker sections.
