Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday reportedly asked Vijay to show majority numbers and submit a list of supporting MLAs during the second round of discussions on government formation in Tamil Nadu, sources said.According to sources, the Governor sought clarity on the “magic number” required to form the government and asked the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief to furnish details of legislators backing the party’s claim.Vijay explores legal optionsSources said Vijay was reluctant to seek support from the BJP and later held consultations with senior party leaders and legal advisors at his residence in Nilankarai following the meeting.Party leaders reportedly advised TVK to explore legal remedies by approaching either the Supreme Court or the High Court over the government formation process. Some leaders also suggested the possibility of fresh elections, sources added.Earlier in the day, Vijay met Governor Arlekar at Lok Bhavan for the second consecutive day amid continuing political uncertainty in the state. Senior TVK leaders were also present during the discussions.TVK short of majority markTVK has staked claim to form the government with support from Congress MLAs. However, the alliance remains short of the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.Meanwhile, Thol Thirumavalavan urged the Governor to invite Vijay to form the government and allow him to prove majority on the floor of the House.Speaking to regional media, Thirumavalavan alleged that the BJP was interfering in Tamil Nadu politics and creating confusion over the formation of the government.“TVK has been chosen as the single largest party by the people. Therefore, he should be allowed to take office. That is the guidance provided by the Constitution,” he said.The Communist Party of India also urged the Governor to follow constitutional conventions, saying it was inappropriate to ask Vijay to prove majority before swearing in.P Shanmugam said his party had received a letter from Vijay seeking support and that the matter would be discussed at the party’s state committee meeting.TVK ends decades-old political dominanceTVK delivered a major upset in the Assembly elections, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK-AIADMK political axis in Tamil Nadu.With Vijay set to vacate one of the two seats he won, TVK’s effective strength in the Assembly will reduce to 107.
