The Bathinda police have identified and nominated the fifth accused in the murder case of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari alias Kamal Kaur Bhabhi as Shamsher Singh alias Shera of Jhabal village in Tarn Taran district, who is currently evading arrest.Notably, four persons, including key accused Amritpal Singh Mehron, Jaspreet Singh, Nimratjit Singh and Ranjit Singh, all Nihangs, have already been arrested and are in judicial custody. The police have also filed a supplementary challan against Amritpal and Ranjit in the court. Amritpal was extradited from the UAE and brought back to India on April 10 this year.Notably, the badly decomposed body of 36-year-old Kamal, a Ludhiana resident belonging to a migrant worker family, was recovered on the night of June 11 last year from the rear seat of a car parked outside Adesh University at Bhucho Kalan village along the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway after locals complained of a foul smell.Shamsher, who had remained unidentified so far, along with Ranjit of the same village, is accused of dropping Amritpal Mehron at the Amritsar airport after the murder, helping him flee abroad.Amritpal, a resident of Mehron village in Moga district, was declared a proclaimed offender by a court in February this year. The police have claimed that the murder was a result of “moral policing”. According to the police, Amritpal, who knew Kamal, had earlier cautioned her against posting “indecent” videos on social media and had planned to teach her a lesson. Along with his associates, he allegedly hatched a conspiracy and strangled her to death.SP (City) Narinder Singh said, “The lone remaining accused has been identified as Shera of Jhabal village. Efforts are underway to arrest him. Besides, proceedings have been initiated to get a lookout circular issued against him.”Meanwhile, Advocate Manpreet Singh Brar, counsel for Amritpal Singh Mehron, said, “The police identified Shamsher Singh Shera as an accused in this case, but the challan does not mention which vehicle was used to drop Amritpal at the Amritsar airport.”
