The group came across the device in a remote cave near Lefkada and towed it to the nearby port of Vasiliki on Thursday.

After they arrived, they alerted the coast guard.

Video footage caught the moment it was brought in, showing the large black submarine-esque vessel being dragged by a Greek coast guard boat.

Following the strange discovery in the Ionian Sea, the defence ministry took control of the situation.

Carrying several explosives, the engine of the weapon was still running when it was found, according to local media.

The drone had been loaded with several explosives and three detonators, Proto Thema reported.

Reports have also alluded to the mystery drone potentially being Ukrainian-made and linked to the country’s ongoing war with Russia.

No visible markings that could identify its place of origin were visible in the video.

Greek military experts are investigating what the drone’s purpose was.

Inquiries will also find whether it ended up in Greek waters due to a tech failure or loss of communication with its control centre.

One outlet speculated the vessel could have been prepared to fight against a Russian “shadow fleet”.

The shadow fleet refers to hundreds of tankers that transport Moscow‘s oil and gas to bypass Western sanctions following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

According to newspaper Ta Nea, the drone resembled Ukraine‘s MAGURA V5 drone – which has been effectively used on numerous occasions.

The claim has not yet been verified, however similar vessels have been found off the coast of Crete.

Ukrainian sea drones have pushed naval warfare into the future following Moscow’s invasion.

They relentlessly hunt down Russian warships and tankers in the open ocean, even targeting naval bases.

Once the investigation into the drone has been completed, all the necessary information will be sent to the European Union.

In November last year, Ukraine took responsibility for a naval drone attack on two sanctioned Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea.

Video showed the moment the waterborne drones exploded the vessels, turning them into fiery infernos, sending thick black smoke into the air.

In March, Moscow also accused Ukraine of hitting another sanctioned tanker that had been loaded with liquefied natural gas.

It had been anchored in the Mediterranean Sea between Libya and Malta.

No crew were on board the Arctic Metagaz at the time, with the detonation leaving it badly damaged and drifting.

Ukraine has not confirmed the reports, which happened thousands of miles from the country’s coast.
