The stalemate over formation of the next government in Tamil Nadu has reached the Supreme Court with the filing of two separate petitions against Governor Rajendra Arlekar’s refusal to invite TVK chief Vijay for swearing-in despite TVK emerging as the single largest party following the April 23 assembly elections.Former IPS officer M Ramasubramani on Saturday moved the top court challenging the Tamil Nadu Governor’s refusal to invite TVK chief C Joseph Vijay to form the new government despite his party winning the highest 108 seats in the 234-member state assembly.Ramasubramani, who served as an Additional Director General of Police and an Inspector General of Police, contended that the Governor’s decision amounted to an unconstitutional determination of a majority outside the Assembly. The Governor could not deny TVK an opportunity to prove its majority through a floor test, he submitted. The TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly in the April 23 polls and emerged as the single largest party. The Congress party, with five MLAs, has extended support to TVK.Two Left parties (CPI and CPI (M), each having two seats), have also reportedly extended support to the TVK bringing it closer to the magic number of 118 needed for a simple majority.Vijay, the TVK founder, has met Governor Arlekar twice, requesting to be invited to form the government. However, no invitation has been extended so far to the new party to form the government. Now, TVK is reportedly wooing  Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol. Thirumavalavan to reach the magic figure. On Friday, Ezhilarasi K — a member of actor Vijay-led TVK — had moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to Governor Arlekar to invite his single largest political party to form the government in the state.Petitioner Ezhilarasi K contended that the Governor’s failure to invite Vijay violated the Constitution.Ezhilarasi’s petition made the principal secretary to the governor, the state government and the Centre as parties. He has urged the top court to issue a writ of mandamus or any such other writ to direct the Tamil Nadu Governor to invite TVK leader C Joseph Vijay to form the next government and to administer him the oath as the Chief Minister of the state.
