The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has issued a show-cause notice to Olympian Vinesh Phogat over a series of charges, including her failure to make the weight at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games that resulted in her disqualification.Vinesh, who was eyeing a return post-retirement and motherhood, has been barred from taking part in the 2026 Senior Open Ranking Tournament at Nandini Nagar, Gonda.According to the notice, sent by federation president Sanjay Kumar Singh, Vinesh has 14 days to send her reply. The WFI accused her of causing national embarrassment with her conduct on social media, which, according to the federation, damaged the reputation of Indian wrestling. The notice cites four violations — her disqualification from the 2024 Paris Olympics for failing to make the weight; the ‘whereabouts failures’ under anti-doping rules; failing to intimate the United World Wrestling (UWW) about her comeback well in time; and her competing in two weight categories (50 kg and 53 kg) during the selection trials that were held in March 2024 by the then Indian Olympic Association-appointed ad hoc panel. The notice comes only a week after Vinesh came out in the open as one of the six victims who had lodged a sexual harassment complaint against former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. She had also raised concerns about the neutrality of the referees at the Gonda competition. The notice sent on Saturday also cites her failure to notify the UWW, under Article 5.7 of the anti-doping rules that mandates athletes to make it known to the authorities at least six months before and be available for doping tests.“Please take notice that should you fail to submit your written reply within the stipulated period of 14 days or fail to avail yourself of the opportunity of a personal hearing if and when offered, the federation shall be constrained to proceed ex parte and pass such order(s) as it may deem fit and proper on the basis of the material on record,” Singh wrote in the notice, a copy of which is with The Tribune.“Pending submission and consideration of your reply, on the basis of your letter/email sent on December 12, 2025, your minimum requirement of a six-month period has not yet expired and as a consequence, you shall not be eligible to participate in any WFI competitions and events till June 26, including your ineligibility to participate in the 2026 Senior Open Ranking Tournament at Nandini Nagar, Gonda (May 10-12) and any other forthcoming national, ranking, selection and international competitions, in the wider interest of the sports and federation,” he added.
