Hailing India’s multi-party parliamentary democracy as a “deep-rooted” system, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Jattvibeday praised the Constitution and the judiciary for playing a highly significant role in strengthening it.“During the 76-year journey of our Constitution, we have deeply strengthened the roots of our democracy. We have certainly reinforced our multi-party democratic parliamentary system, and every change brought about through Parliament and state legislatures has been accepted. This reflects the deep roots of our democracy, in which our Constitution, the people and the judiciary have made a significant contribution,” Shah said.Speaking after releasing Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s books ‘The Bench, the Bar, and the Bizarre’ and ‘The Lawful and the Awful’ here this evening, Shah said, “The beautiful balance and mutual propriety among the Legislature, the Judiciary, and the Executive is the true beauty of our democracy.”‘The Bench, the Bar, and the Bizarre’ is about the space between institutional grandeur and human absurdity while ‘The Lawful and the Awful’ narrates quirky tales from the world of law.The function was attended by CJI Surya Kant, Supreme Court and high court judges, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, former Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and a large number of lawyers.CJI Kant heaped praise on Mehta for capturing the drama, humour and human side of courtrooms through his books, saying reading them felt “like binging into a courtroom drama which incidentally wanders into a stand-up special”.”Everything… from dress code, disasters… to AI hallucinations in judgments and pleadings, he has even covered drunk and disorderly conduct. The books combined comic timing with extensive research,” Justice Kant said.Attorney-General R Venkataramani praised Mehta’s books, saying they offer a rare and insightful glimpse into the “hidden dimensions” of justice delivery. Describing the works as much more than collections of courtroom anecdotes, he said, “I wonder how studiously and courageously Tushar Bhai has blended facets deeply relevant for understanding the hidden dimensions of doing justice.”Noting that a strong justice system is the foundation of the common citizen’s faith, the orderly functioning of society and the character of the nation, the Home Minister said as a society, “we have succeeded in preserving that trust”.Shah said the people were confident that if any injustice was done to them, the Constitution was alive and vigilant to protect them. “If their rights are violated, the doors of justice remain open, and whenever the voice of a weak individual or a weaker viewpoint is suppressed, it will certainly be heard in the courts,” he asserted.“It’s on the basis of these three fundamental pillars that our democracy has become strong, and broadly speaking, the common citizen’s hope for justice is an important reflection of both social balance and the character of the nation,” the Home Minister said.“The beauty of our democracy lies in the fact that the Constitution created institutions not to oppose one another, but to maintain balance among them. He said that this spirit must be understood in its true sense. The executive takes decisions, while the judiciary conducts a constitutional review of those decisions,” he said.“It’s the responsibility of all of us to identify and rectify the small loopholes that still exist in this system, and that both the Judiciary and the Executive must work together to improve them, he said, adding, “This will require moving forward with a concrete and time-bound roadmap.”
