Three days after Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj served a 15-day ultimatum to the state government to remove certain provisions from the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkaar (Amendment) Act 2026 in the presence of Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs today lodged objections in the writing. The Jathedar said the Act, ratified without the consent of Sikh bodies, had led to fear among the community members who had started removing Gurbani manuscripts and gutkas from their houses and were depositing them at gurdwaras. He said his office had been receiving numerous emails, with people pointing it out that the amendment had been aimed at distancing the Sikhs from Guru Granth Sahib. As per definition of the word “custodian” mentioned in the Act, the responsibility for sacrilege has been conspiratorially assigned to those who have saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. These include Sikh sangat, gurdwara management committees, granthi and pathi (priests), sewadars and families who get Akhand Path or Gurbani recited etc.“In theory, Guru Granth Sahib can be our custodian, but how can a human being be a custodian of Guru Sahib?” he asked. He said the government did not release the legal draft publicly before passing it, nor did it sought objections from the Sikh community and institutions, which he termed a direct interference in the Sikh religious affairs.Putting a unique identification number on Guru Granth Sahib tantamount to tampering with the original saroop of the Sikh scripture, which the Panth would never tolerate, he said.
