Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri on Tuesday termed the lockdown talk as completely false and a rumour saying India has enough fuel supplies.”There is no shortage of any petroleum product in the country. India has 60 days of crude oil, 60 days of LNG and 45 days of LPG reserves available. Amid tensions in West Asia, to ensure uninterrupted supply, India has unprecedentedly increased its daily LPG production (from 35,000 tonnes to 54,000 tonnes),” Puri said at a CII event. He said that during the time of the crisis, many countries experienced fluctuations in oil prices and availability, but India was not affected at all.”Some people tried their best to engage in hoarding and spread rumors, but our efforts ensured that there was no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in the country,” the minister said.He described as myth that India has refused to take LNG imports from Russia.”The truth is India has never imported LNG from Russia at all. The myth is that a major lockdown will be imposed in the country. The truth is this is false and a rumour. Whether it was the coronavirus period or some other time, the opposition has always tried to spread rumours and incite people,” said Puri.He said that during the period of tension in West Asia, the country has increased its daily LPG production by almost 55%.”This achievement is truly extraordinary and reflects India’s capability, self-reliance, and strength in crisis management,” the minister said. He, however, warned that state-run oil marketing companies face losses of up to Rs 1 lakh crore in a quarter if high crude prices stay and retail fuel prices remain the same.At some stage, he said, an assessment needs to be made on how long retailers can sustain losses from selling petrol, diesel and cooking gas below cost. The minister, however, refused to speculate if rates would be raised anytime soon.”We have no supply-side problems,” he said at CII’s Annual Business Summit here, adding that India began the crisis with “more than enough” crude oil and LPG inventories and had since ramped up domestic LPG production to 54,000 tonnes per day from about 35,000 tonnes previously.
