A local court on Thursday framed charges against Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh in connection with the February 2023 attack on the Ajnala police station. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Parinder Singh dropped charges under the Arms Act and destruction of evidence, after defence lawyer Rituraj Sandhu argued that no weapons were recovered from the accused. The court framed charges against Amritpal under several serious provisions, including attempt to murder, causing grievous injuries, obstructing public servants from performing official duty, criminal conspiracy, damaging government property, and issuing death threats while leading an unlawful mob.During the hearing, the defence maintained that police had wrongly invoked provisions related to illegal arms and destruction of evidence. The case pertains to the February 2023 incident in which Amritpal and his supporters allegedly stormed the Ajnala police station to press the police to release aide Lovepreet Toofan in an attempt-to-murder case.Following the attack, Punjab Police registered a case and launched a statewide crackdown.Amritpal, currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam after the expiry of his detention period under the National Security Act, is scheduled to appear before the court again on May 16.
