Fourteen years after the Nirbhaya gang rape case shook the national capital, Delhi witnessed another horrific incident after a 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped inside a moving private sleeper bus by its driver and conductor, the police said on Thursday. The incident allegedly took place late on the night of May 12. Both accused have been arrested. The victim, a resident of the Pitampura slums and mother of three children, was returning home after finishing her shift at a local factory in Mangolpuri when she was allegedly dragged into the bus near the B-Block bus stand in Saraswati Vihar. The distance between Mangolpuri and Pitampura is around 5 km. The incident has raised fresh questions over Delhi Police’s claims regarding night patrolling and surveillance for the safety of residents.According to the victim’s statement, she was forcibly pulled inside the bus, after which the accused shut the door and instructed the driver to move the vehicle. Inside the moving bus, two men allegedly raped her repeatedly. The ordeal reportedly continued for nearly 7 km till Nangloi Metro station. The police said after sexually assaulting the victim for nearly two hours, the accused allegedly dumped her in an injured condition on the roadside around 2 am and fled. The woman later made a PCR call and narrated the incident to the police.“Immediate assistance and help were provided to the victim and a case was registered at Rani Bagh police station,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Vikram Singh said in a video message.Based on the woman’s statement, an FIR was registered under Sections 64(1) (rape), 70(1) (gang rape) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the DCP said.“Both accused were produced before a city court and sent to judicial custody. Our teams are investigating the matter from all possible angles. CCTV footage is being collected to build a strong case against the accused,” a police officer said. The police have seized the bus, which bears a Bihar registration number, and investigators are also probing whether it had automatic doors.
