Amid growing discontent within the ruling AAP ahead of the Municipal Corporation (MC) election in Bathinda, MLA Jagroop Singh Gill today went live on Facebook and raised serious questions over the party’s ticket distribution process, alleging that the entire MC setup had been “handed over to one man”.Notably, Gill and Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) chairman Amarjit Singh Mehta, along with his son Padamjeet Singh Mehta, who recently completed his term as Mayor of Bathinda, are known to share strained relations.During the live session, Gill named several local party workers and ward presidents, including Bhupinder Singh, Gurtej Singh, and Jalandhar Singh, alleging that many senior and loyal party workers had been ignored in the ticket distribution process. He also mentioned “Mehta” during his remarks, expressing resentment toward the party leadership.Further, referring to his nephew Sukhdeep Singh Dhillon, Gill said he had secured nearly 80 per cent of the votes polled in his area in the last election and had also been affected by ward reservation and delimitation changes. However, Gill announced that despite the resentment, he and his supporters would not abandon the elections midway. “As an MLA, I say we will stay united and continue working for the party,” he said, adding that Sukhdeep Singh Dhillon would withdraw from contesting Ward No. 14, where the party has fielded him.Gill, who was a member of the ticket allotment committee for the MC poll, claimed that when the committee was scheduled to hold its first meeting, it was cancelled after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora. He further said that later, Cabinet Minister Dr Baljit Kaur was announced as the chairperson, but even then no meeting of the committee was held.Gill claimed that around 76-77 applications for MC tickets had been received by him and that he had forwarded the applications to observer Rakesh Puri.“Workers kept approaching me asking why they were not being given tickets,” he said, adding that he chose to go live because he wanted the public to know the facts.Without naming anyone directly initially, Gill alleged that many former Congress councillors had been inducted into the party and people accused them of entering through “horse-trading”.“When I joined AAP, the party had said honest people were welcome,” he said.Listing his political journey, Gill said he had been continuously elected as an MC member since 1979 and had also served as president of the Municipal Council (before Bathinda was accorded Municipal Corporation status), chairman of Improvement Trust, and of District Planning Board. “There has never been any allegation against me or my family,” he asserted. The MLA alleged that old party workers had been sidelined and that “the entire Bathinda city and Municipal Corporation have been handed over to one man”.“Dictatorship is bad. Our party is fighting the dictatorship of Narendra Modi, but dictatorship within the party is also wrong,” he said.Notably, Gill had been publicly expressing his resentment over the delimitation of municipal wards for the past few days.Later in the day, three AAP activists — Jasvir Singh, Dr Rajani Jindal, and Basant Singh — joined BJP in the presence of former MLA Sarup Chand Singla.Meanwhile, a senior AAP leader said, “The party has distributed tickets on the basis of winnability, and Gill sahib is supporting the candidates.”
