The New Delhi Municipal Council has said it does not plan to rename one of Delhi’s posh colonies and is only planning to certify it as “Anupam colony” which means a model settlement.Council sources said a lot of people had misunderstood the NDMC invitation about declaration of Jor Bagh as Anupam Colony. The invite was also shared today on social media by Shiv Sena UBT leader Priyanka Chaturvedi who said a posh colony of Delhi was going to be renamed. Many social media users reacted to the post.BJP leader Neel Kant Bakshi meanwhile fact-checked Chaturvedi and said the invitation of the NDMC had been misunderstood.”The NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) poster shared did not announce the renaming of Jor Bagh to Anupam Colony. It’s simply declaring Jor Bagh as an official Anupam Colony, a certification/tag given to colonies that achieve high standards of zero-waste and self-sustainable living,” Bakshi said.He said “Anupam Colony” is a sustainability certification, not a new name. The colony’s official name stays “Jor Bagh”. New Moti Bagh, Kaka Nagar, Bapu Dham, Aradhana Cooperative Housing Society have already got this tag.”I repeat “The name hasn’t changed. Anupam is merely a certification tag.”The NDMC event is scheduled for tomorrow (17 May 2026) at Jor Bagh itself, where council teams will formally declare the colony as model colony, along with a tree-planting drive (“Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”).What “Anupam Colony” actually meansNDMC’s Anupam Colony initiative is a model project for decentralised waste management. Colonies that get this tag:- Achieve 100% waste segregation at source- Process wet and horticultural waste on-site (via composting units)- Use mechanised, dust-free cleaning systems- Aim for zero waste sent to landfills (no need to transport household waste outside the colony)
