The mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, the 33-year-old former ‘Miss Pune’ and MBA graduate who was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal earlier this month, has claimed that Twisha had insisted on aborting her pregnancy and became emotionally disturbed after learning she had conceived.Speaking on the matter, Giribala Singh, a retired judge and one of the accused in the case, claimed that the family had accepted Twisha’s lifestyle and career choices after her marriage to Samarth Singh in December 2025.Pregnancy became the turning pointAccording to Giribala, Twisha’s behaviour changed after she learnt she had conceived on April 17.“The moment the conception message came on the 17th, her attitude changed. She said she did not want the child,” Giribala alleged.“I asked her why she did not want the child. She said it feels like the child is killing me from inside. I do not want it,” Giribala saidShe further claimed that Twisha became emotionally unstable after pregnancy and would harm herself physically.“That evening when I returned from office, she was in a state where she was hitting herself and saying she could not stay here,” Giribala said. The accused mother-in-law alleged that the family tried to calm her and told her she could leave peacefully if she wanted to return to Noida.“We told her if you want to go, your ticket can be arranged for tomorrow peacefully. But she packed her bags immediately and called a cab despite drivers and cars being available at home,” she claimed.According to Giribala, Twisha left the house at night and the family later discovered she had not directly reached Noida despite initially telling her mother she was at the airport.“She was not telling the truth. Even her mother did not know where she was,” Giribala alleged.Claims over behaviour and freedomGiribala Singh repeatedly described Twisha as someone who resisted being “controlled” and alleged that she avoided family involvement despite initially expressing interest in children, plants and family life before marriage.“She had earlier told us she loved children and wanted at least four kids,” Giribala said.“But after marriage, she would say nobody will pressurise me.”She further alleged that Twisha objected to even informal family expectations such as dining together.“She felt everything was an attempt to control her,” Giribala claimed. At one point during the interaction, Giribala alleged that Twisha had told Samarth Singh: “What do you people think, I am a buffalo who will only eat food and produce children?”She also alleged that Twisha’s emotional state worsened after undergoing medical termination of pregnancy.“After MTP, there is naturally mental pain. A father also feels happiness on hearing about conception. Today, people go to IVF clinics for this happiness,” she said.No harassment, no dowry demandRejecting allegations levelled by Twisha’s family, Giribala Singh denied there had been any dowry related dispute or serious fights in the house.“There was no such fight,” she said. She also dismissed allegations that influential people were interfering in the investigation to protect the accused family.Responding to allegations made by Twisha’s father regarding Madhya Pradesh’s Lokayukta official Satyendra Singh, Giribala said, “He is not our relative and there is no interference from him. He is a very fair and respected person.”She claimed that Twisha’s family had launched a public campaign to isolate the accused family socially.“They managed all TV platforms and started the Justice for Twisha campaign,” she said, apparently referring to the campaign around Twisha’s death.“They are trying to ensure even our well-wishers do not speak to us.”Questions raised over family’s conductGiribala also questioned why Twisha’s family had not intervened earlier if they believed their daughter was unhappy in the marriage.“If they felt the children were troubled, where were they in these five months? Why did they not come even once?” she asked. She claimed Twisha never directly told her that she did not want to remain part of the family.“She never said she did not want to be in this family. She only said she was not what we thought she was,” Giribala stated.‘My son respects the law’Defending her son Samarth Singh, against whom a case has been registered under Sections 80(2) and 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to dowry death and cruelty, Giribala Singh said he would cooperate with the legal process while protecting his legal rights.“He respects the law because he himself comes from a legal background,” she said.“At the same time, when there is an atmosphere where it appears he may be put behind bars despite there being nothing in the case, he will exercise his legal rights through his advocates.”“For five months, superficially, I felt the girl had very independent views. But times have changed and we were all fine with it,” she said.Giribala claimed the family was encouraging Twisha to continue her professional and academic ambitions after marriage. She said law books had been arranged for her and plans were being made for her admission into legal studies.“Our only effort was that she should continue her law preparation. We had even planned her admission,” she said. The SIT formed by Madhya Pradesh Police is continuing its investigation into the death of Twisha Sharma, whose family has alleged murder, mental harassment and destruction of evidence while demanding a fresh postmortem and court monitored probe.
