Even as Twisha Sharma’s family continued to seek a second post-mortem in the suspicious death case, the Bhopal police on Tuesday formally asked them to collect her body from AIIMS Bhopal, warning that prolonged storage could lead to decomposition of the remains. In a letter issued by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Katara Hills police station on Wednesday, police informed the family that the body of Twisha Sharma, whose post-mortem was conducted on May 13, had been kept in the mortuary at AIIMS Bhopal at a temperature of minus four degrees Celsius. The communication stated that the hospital administration had, on May 18, written to the police saying the body should not continue to remain stored at the facility as there were no arrangements to preserve it at minus 80 degrees Celsius, a condition considered necessary to prevent decomposition for a longer duration. The letter further stated that the family had earlier approached both the Police Commissioner’s office and Katara Hills police station seeking preservation of the body and a second post-mortem examination.Responding to this, police informed the family that they had already conveyed before the court that they had no objection to a second post-mortem and were ready to facilitate the procedure. However, the communication added that since there was a “full possibility” of decomposition of the body, the family should collect the remains at the earliest. The development comes amid the ongoing probe into Twisha Sharma’s death, registered under provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The case is being investigated by an SIT of Madhya Pradesh Police in Bhopal.
