Punjab Governor and Administrator of the UT of Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria, took a step toward energy conservation and environmental protection today by supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal. He set an example by avoiding petrol and diesel vehicles for official engagements and opting for public and alternative modes of transport.Recently, the Prime Minister appealed to citizens to use petroleum resources judiciously and conserve fuel in view of the tense situation in the Gulf region. Taking the message forward, Governor Kataria decided to refrain from using petrol and diesel-driven vehicles every Wednesday.This morning, the Governor, along with his staff, travelled by electric bus to Baltana for the foundation-stone-laying ceremony of the railway under-bridge (RUB). He then proceeded to the UT Secretariat in Chandigarh in an electric golf cart, promoting eco-friendly transportation.Many senior officers and employees of the Chandigarh Administration also participated in the initiative by commuting by bicycle, walking, using CTU buses, and carpooling to promote fuel conservation and sustainable mobility.Interacting with mediapersons, the Governor said conserving natural resources is the need of the hour and every citizen must contribute. He added that even small initiatives can lay the foundation for significant change.He appealed to officers and employees of the Chandigarh Administration and the general public to make greater use of public transport, electric vehicles, bicycles, and other alternative modes of transport.He further said that after seeing positive results from the initiative in Chandigarh, he would urge the Punjab Government to adopt similar environment-friendly and sustainable measures.The Governor thanked people for responding positively to the Prime Minister’s appeal and said collective efforts in the national interest can help address future challenges.
