Punjab, known for its rich culinary tradition and primarily associated with milk products, has something unpalatable to contend with, as one out of every three milk samples collected in the state has failed quality tests. The findings were shared by the Punjab Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Wednesday. The FDA carried out an extensive two-day long state-wide paneer sampling drive. While sharing the results of the milk sampling drive Cabinet Minister for Health & Family Welfare Dr Balbir Singh said that 68 out of the 204 milk samples collected recently, failed tests. One milk sample was found unsafe for drinking.Following the poor results of milk sample testing, Dr Balbir ordered a two-day statewide paneer sampling drive under the supervision of FDA Punjab Commissioner Kanwalpreet Brar, targeting various points across the dairy supply chain.Dr Balbir informed that local dairies were checked throughout the state, leading to the collection of 211 paneer samples from dairies, processing units and retail outlets in both the urban and rural sectors.“The collected samples have been sent to accredited State Food laboratory for analysis to detect any type of adulteration, contamination, and compliance with prescribed standards”, said the Health Minister. While issuing stern warning, “Any Food Business Operator (FBO) found violating the norms will face strict legal action as per the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.”Dr Balbir also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and act as partners in the mission by reporting any suspected case of food adulteration to the concerned authorities.FDA Kanwal Preet Brar, noted that the Food Safety Officers (FSOs) are not only enforcing the law but also sensitising the food-business operators about hygienic handling and proper storage practices. She stressed that maintaining high standards in the dairy sector remains non-negotiable for the well-being of the citizens.
