Carbon monoxide levels are believed to have gone over the limit at the deep Liushenyu coal mine in Changzhi City.

But the exact cause of the deadly blast is still unknown.

The site’s entrance reportedly has a steep slope of around 30 degrees – with rescue supplies only able to be transported in and out by cart.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said local authorities should “spare no effort” in the desperate search operation.

An investigation has also been launched into the tragedy, he announced.

Several officials in charge of running the mine are understood to have been arrested, according to state media.
