After inmates ran amok in the Kapurthala jail due to a clash, authorities lobbed teargas shells and resorted to cane-charge to restore order, officials said on Jattvibeday. While two inmates received injuries during the cane-charge, another was hit by a tear gas shell, police said. The incident occurred late on Saturday night when some of the Block 4 inmates clashed over some issue. The exact cause of the clash is yet to be confirmed.Jail authorities tried to intervene in the matter to prevent them from fighting, a senior police officer said, adding that the inmates, however, tried to scuffle with the officials. Some of the inmates came out of the barrack, reached its rooftop and a few of them even set some clothes on fire, the officer said.Following the incident, heavy police force was deployed to bring the situation under control.“Police used tear gas shells and resorted to cane-charge to control the situation,” the officer said.No personnel or jail staff have received any injury, according to police. The inmates have returned to their barrack, and all of them have been counted, police further said.DIG Jalandhar Range, Naveen Singla, told The Tribune that a clash erupted among inmates late on Saturday night. “A fight broke out among inmates of the Kapurthala jail this evening, following which around 100 to 150 prisoners came out of their barracks, indulged in hooliganism, and set fire to Barrack No. 4. Some of them also climbed onto the roofs. Police personnel swung into action and used grenades and tear gas shells to push them back into their barracks. The situation is now under control.”The DIG said one inmate sustained an injury due to tear gas and was admitted to the civil hospital.Responding to questions about the delay in controlling the remaining inmates, the DIG said the police were acting carefully to avoid injuries to security personnel. The DIG clarified that no inmate had escaped and that all prisoners remained inside the jail premises. He also said the incident was localised, affecting only one block and involving around 100 to 150 inmates. There are 10 to 12 blocks in the Kapurthala jail, housing between 3,000 and 4,000 inmates. —with PTI
