The new Wetherspoons location will be run by the University of Birmingham students union

Located on the University of Birmingham campus, Joe’s Bar will welcome its first customers tomorrow (Tuesday, May 26).

The site marks a a joint venture between Wetherspoons and the university’s student union run bar Joe’s, offering budget drinks and food for students and members of the public.

Joe’s Bar will continue to be run and managed by the Guild of Students, while benefitting from the support and structure of the Wetherspoons business model.

The pub takes its name from the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower in the heart of the city, named after the university’s first chancellor.

A full refurbishment has been carried out in preparation for the grand opening, including knocking through the adjoining Mermaid bar to create one larger space.

The new and improved interior includes an updated bar area as well as additional fittings throughout.

Speaking on the new venture last month, Wetherspoon’s chief executive John Hutson said: “We are delighted to have entered into the partnership with the Guild of Students and look forward to working with it to make Joe’s Bar a great success”

Guild of Students President, Antonia Listrat, believes the partnership will bring many benefits to students.

“Students will benefit from not only its value-for-money food and drinks offering, but also the expansion of job opportunities within the bar,” she said.

“As a charity and the students’ union for over 36,000 students, any surplus we make gets invested back into supporting student activities.

“This partnership will strengthen our commercial endeavours to support a vibrant future for the Guild and enhance the overall student experience.”
