After months of turmoil — from allegations against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and exclusion from ranking trials to a courtroom victory — wrestler-turned-MLA Vinesh Phogat has now slipped into complete silence, fully focused on what could be the most crucial comeback of her career.A recent order by the Delhi High Court paved the way for Vinesh to participate in the selection trials for the Asian Games, scheduled for May 30 and 31.Her father-in-law Rajpal Rathi, who lives in Bakhta Khera village in Jind’s Julana Assembly segment, said Vinesh was concentrating entirely on training.“She is practising at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Sonepat with her husband and 10-month-old baby by her side. She is giving her all in training,” he said.Asked whether the family had approached either the Haryana Government or the Centre during the recent controversy over the Wrestling Federation of India’s decision to deny her participation in the trials in Gonda, Rathi declined to comment.“Vinesh is confident about her return to international wrestling. We are thankful to everyone and have no grouse against anybody. The court has allowed her to participate in the trials, which are extremely crucial for her,” he said.He added that after months of rigorous training in Bengaluru, Vinesh was now in excellent shape and continuing intense practice in Sonepat.Responding to questions about expectations of residents in Julana, from where Vinesh is a Congress MLA, Rathi said he had been listening to public grievances in her absence.“Since Vinesh has not been available for the past several days, I have tried to help people as much as I can,” he said, adding they were receiving “as much support as any Opposition MLA gets from the government.”Meanwhile, Vinesh and her husband Somvir Rathi have maintained near-complete silence. A close aide accompanying her in Sonepat said the wrestler had cut herself off from distractions.“She is giving 100 per cent to wrestling. She is not talking to anybody and has even disconnected from news and social media. This is one of the most crucial phases of her career and she has taken it as a challenge,” the aide said.During the recent turbulent period, only a few voices — including her uncle Mahavir Phogat, wrestler Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia — publicly supported her. Vinesh eventually approached the high court after receiving little support from wrestling authorities and governments. Now, with the court’s permission secured, Vinesh is set to face her toughest sporting test yet when she steps onto the mat on May 30 and 31 in a bid to qualify for the Asian Games. She is likely to face another wrestler from Haryana during the trials.Speaking to ‘The Tribune’, Bajrang Punia, currently in the US, and Mahavir Phogat expressed optimism about her prospects.“I am hopeful that she will make an emphatic comeback,” said Mahavir Phogat.Punia also reiterated his support for Vinesh. He said he stood firmly with her both during the fight against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and in her efforts to return to competitive wrestling.
