Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi took to social media to condemn the move to appoint controversial rapper Honey Singh as the brand ambassador for Punjab’s anti-drug campaign.Reacting to a meeting held on Tuesday between Honey Singh and senior BJP leader Tarun Chugh to discuss Punjab’s growing drug crisis, Jassi questioned the intent behind the decision. Referring to Honey Singh’s past struggles with drug addiction and his provocative songs, Jassi took a veiled jibe, calling him one of those who popularised drug culture among Punjabi youth. “The ones who pushed Punjabi youth into this well are not ambassadors or saviours of Punjab’s youth. It seems to be a deliberate attempt to provoke Punjab,” he said. “People who live in Delhi, Mumbai, or other metros do not understand Punjab’s culture. One popular face does not represent Punjab,” he added. Jassi said in his video that he usually avoids speaking about politics because of its many layers, but chose to address the issue because it concerns Punjab. “When it is about Punjab, I will speak up, no matter how much damage I have to endure.”Jassi also recalled meeting Tarun Chugh in the past and discussing Punjab-related issues with him. He added that several leaders are disliked by the people of Punjab. “Don’t take our silence as our weakness. The people you are promoting, whether political or not, are not liked by the people of Punjab. Sikhi and Gurbani are in the DNA of Punjabis, whether Hindu, Sikh, or others,” he said.In January this year, Jassi had also called out Honey Singh for lewd comments made during his Delhi concerts after a video went viral. He had said that Singh had crossed all limits.Interestingly, a few weeks ago, a BJP leader from Jalandhar sent a complaint to the DGP regarding an old song by Honey Singh, in which he strongly objected to obscene dances and women in bikinis featured in the video.
