India’s first hydrogen-powered train approved for Haryana’s Jind-Sonepat section

The Ministry of Railways has approved a 10-coach hydrogen DEMU (Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit) train service between Jind and Sonepat. It will be the first such train in the country.Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Haryana would script new milestones in development and rail infrastructure.“This Hydrogen DEMU train will prove to be a milestone, keeping future projects in view,” said the Chief Minister.A licence has been granted for the filling and storage of Compressed Hydrogen Gas (CHG) in the Hydrogen Storage System from the Hydrogen Generation Unit for dispensing as automotive fuel at Jind, Haryana.The train will run at the maximum speed of 75 kmph. The trial runs have been made.As per a letter from the Director, Civil Engineering, Railway Board, Kishan Rawat, to Director General, Research Design and Standards Organisation, and General Manager, Northern Railway, dated May 22, the sanction of Rolling Stock has been processed for operation over a dedicated section Jind-Sonepat only, whereas the scheduled maintenance of the Trainset has been planned at Shakurbasti, Delhi.Necessary authorisation for the movement of the trainset from Jind-Shakurbasti-Jind in dead condition (Hauled by Loco) shall be ensured in accordance with extant codal provisions, Rawat added.He also called for the provision of manning for the control room 24×7, with complete access to the data log for the hydrogen refueling cycle.Necessary arrangements to ensure the proper security of the entire premises of the hydrogen plant and refueling facility shall be made to prevent unauthorised access, he added.Regarding the maintenance of the hydrogen trainset, necessary safety provisions as per standard guidelines will be ensured for the proposed maintenance facility at Shakurbasti.“A system of regular audit/check shall be devised and implemented.Provision of a standby compressor unit shall be ensured within the stipulated time period (six months). Positive mounting of all under-gear equipment shall be ensured in all future rakes of Hydrogen Trainset,” he said.Initially, for three months, the train shall be accompanied by trained technical staff having competency in the hydrogen trainset to attend to en-route technical issues.Rawat has also asked to explore alternative sources of green hydrogen fuel.
